Lactose in confectionery and sweets?

Did you know? Lactose hides everywhere! It is naturally found in all dairy products, but not only!

Charcuterie, for example, contains more lactose than cheese, excluding ham. Lactose is also present in many foods which, when eaten by people with lactose intolerance, are likely to cause digestive discomfort, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea.

But what about confectionery and sweets, those sweet little treats that both young and old love to nibble on?

Is there lactose in sweets? 🤔

What could be better (and more addictive!) than to eat a handful of sweets in front of a film, at a birthday party or as part of thea night out with friends during Halloween? 🎃

Sugar is one of the main ingredients in confectionery, Milk sugar also features in the ingredients list of a large number of confectionery products. Milk sugar (lactose) must be broken down into two simple sugars before it can be assimilated by the body. If the enzyme lactase does not carry out this dissociation correctly in the small intestine, then consuming lactose can lead to some or all of the digestive problems mentioned above.

In the food industry, lactose is used in particular as a texturising agent and as a preservative. That's why it's found in foods as varied as crisps, ready meals and sweets.

If you're lactose intolerant, be sure to check the ingredients on sweet packets carefully before buying new sweets. Our advice: stick to this habit even when you regularly eat the same sweets, as manufacturers tend to change the recipe of their products to improve their taste and/or shelf life.

⚠️ Please note: lactose is not always indicated under the name "milk". It can take various forms and hide under the ingredients "whey", "milk powder" or "whey". Do you suffer from lactose intolerance? If so, look out for the words "May contain traces of milk".
