Which food supplements are best for lactose-intolerant children?

Our team tells you which lactase-based food supplements to choose to improve the quality of life of your lactose-intolerant child.

Lactose intolerance in children: causes and effects

In the small intestine, the enzyme lactase is responsible for breaking down milk carbohydrates into simple sugars that are easily assimilated by the body. Lactase activity is highest during the first few weeks of a baby's life. It then declines during childhood and adolescence, reaching a residual level of around 5 to 10% in adulthood.

Lactose intolerance is therefore much less common in children than in adults, but it sometimes appears from an early age. Lactose intolerance in children can be caused by a number of factors, such as genetics or the consequences of an intestinal infection.

In the case of lactase deficiency, the classic symptoms include abdominal pain, acid diarrhoea, diarrhoea and diarrhoea. bloating and nausea. They generally appear after eating dairy products, cold meats or prepared dishes (hamburgers, pizza or sauces) and can vary according to children's sensitivity to lactose and the amount of lactose they consume.

What food supplements are recommended for children with lactose intolerance?

Oral supplementation with the enzyme lactase should be taken before consuming dairy products to facilitate lactose digestion. In practical terms, these food supplements compensate for the natural lack of lactase to reduce or eliminate the undesirable effects of lactose intolerance.

The international standard for measuring the action of enzymes is expressed in FCC (Food Chemical Codex). In the case of lactase-based food supplements, 1,000 FCC correspond to 5 grams of digestible lactose. LACTOLERANCE supplementation is available in the following versions 4,500 FCC and 9,000 FCC to meet every need.

Our lactase is packaged in dry capsules (with an HPMC vegetable gelatine shell for optimum assimilation by the body). From the age of 3, children can use our food supplements in complete safety: simply open the capsules and dissolve the powder in a little water, just before mealtime (this does not affect their effectiveness).

Everything you need to know about the dosage and use of food supplements for children with lactose intolerance

The dosage of lactase-based food supplements varies according to the age and weight of each child. Here is a general recommendation:

  • Under 3: consult a paediatrician for professional advice.
  • 3 to 8 years: limit lactase intake to 3,000-4,500 FCC.
  • 9 years and over: a lactase intake of up to 9,000 FCC is possible depending on your child's individual tolerance.

For a balanced intake of lactose on a daily basis, divide up your intake and offer your child dairy products with other foods. Alternate with lactose-free alternatives, such as lactose-free milks, yoghurts, etc. plant-based milk or mature cheeses.

With the right dietary adjustments and supplements, it's easy to manage children's lactose intolerance in everyday life, so they can enjoy a varied diet without digestive discomfort!
